The short answer: published interior prices for 2026
No web page can price your house. These are the interior numbers that sources publish today, and what each one measures. They are separate reference points, so I would not average them.
| Job | Published range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Typical interior job, national | Average $2,021 (just under $1,000 to over $3,000) | NerdWallet, citing 2026 Angi data. |
| Typical interior project, national | $605–$2,464 | Thumbtack, from its own job data. |
| Per square foot of floor space | $1–$4 | This Old House, a home-improvement guide. |
| Per square foot, walls only | $3.75 | Improovy, a painting company, 2026. It lists $6.75 once walls, trim and ceilings are included. |
| One room, national | $371–$1,011 | Thumbtack. |
| Whole home, 1,400–2,800 sq ft | $5,401–$24,282 | Thumbtack, from Xactware data. It assumes sealing and priming, two coats and two colors. |
| Modeled Temecula home, 1,282 sq ft | $5,370–$9,776 | Homeyou, a lead-generation estimator. A model, not collected quotes. |
The last row is a calculation for an assumed house. A painter’s written estimate for your actual walls is the only number that is a price.
Why one house gets very different numbers
The $2,021 average and the $5,401 whole-home figure look like they cannot both be true. They can, because they price different jobs. Thumbtack’s own page shows it: a typical interior project is $605–$2,464, and painting a whole home is $5,401–$24,282.
The scope you ask for moves the price more than anything else:
- Walls only, or walls plus the rest. Improovy lists $3.75 a square foot for the interior and $6.75 once walls, trim and ceilings are all included. NerdWallet says accents, trim and ceilings might cost extra on top of a wall quote.
- Coats and colors. Thumbtack prices 1,000 sq ft of walls and ceilings at $545–$911 for one coat in one color, $807–$1,350 for two coats in one color, and $998–$1,668 for two coats in two colors.
- One surface at a time. Thumbtack’s national averages for a single surface are walls $700, ceiling $850, trim $940, doors $1,000 and window frames $1,100.
So when two quotes are far apart, check what each one includes before you decide one is a bargain or a rip-off.
The same 2,000 sq ft house, three answers
The clearest way to see the spread is to ask the same question of each source. Here is a 2,000 square foot home:
| Source | 2,000 sq ft interior |
|---|---|
| This Old House | $2,000–$8,000 |
| NerdWallet | $4,000–$12,000 |
| Thumbtack (Xactware data) | $9,019–$15,071 |
Thumbtack’s range assumes a full prep, two coats and two colors. The other two do not say. Use the spread to see how wide the honest answer is, then get written estimates.
For Temecula, Homeyou models a 1,282 sq ft interior at $5,370–$9,776, about $4–$8 a square foot, from an estimate of 122 labor hours. Treat it as a model: the site collects painter leads and shows the figure as an estimate.
Room by room
Room prices are the easiest numbers to compare, and they are also where the sources disagree most. Improovy and This Old House both publish room ranges:
| Room | Improovy (2026) | This Old House |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | $650–$950 (master bedroom $750–$1,260) | $300–$800 |
| Living room | $940–$1,700 | $600–$2,000 |
| Kitchen | $850–$1,350 | $200–$750 |
| Dining room | $750–$1,150 | $600–$1,000 |
CertaPro Painters, a franchise in Orange County, publishes a price list for Yorba Linda (updated June 2026). It is not Temecula, but it breaks one room into the pieces you can choose:
| Item (Yorba Linda) | Published price |
|---|---|
| Standard bedroom walls | $500 |
| Bedroom ceiling | $200 |
| Bedroom baseboards | $100 |
| Standard bathroom walls | $350 |
| Large living room walls | $950 |
| Kitchen walls | $650 |
| Dining room walls | $500 |
| Door and door frame | $50 per side |
| Project minimum | $1,200 or above |
CertaPro prices walls for two coats and ceilings, trim and doors as a one-coat refresh, on 8-foot ceilings. A project minimum means a single small room can cost more than its list price suggests.
What pushes an interior quote up
These are the items sources name as moving an interior quote up:
- Ceiling height. CertaPro adds 25% for 10-foot ceilings, 50% for 12-foot and 75% for 15-foot. Improovy puts walls taller than 10 feet at $0.75–$1.25 more per square foot.
- Ceilings. This Old House lists ceilings at $1–$2.50 per square foot of surface, depending on the texture.
- Doors. This Old House puts an interior door at $40–$100. CertaPro lists $50 a side.
- Repairs and wallpaper. Homeyou says drywall repair is billed at about $20–$50 an hour, and that removing wallpaper can easily double the cost of interior painting in Temecula.
- Labor. This Old House gives $30–$60 an hour when walls are in good condition.
- Season. Thumbtack says interior costs may be lower in winter, when painters have less demand.
Furniture is the cost people forget. Ask who moves it, who covers floors, and whether closets and the insides of doors are in the price.
What to check before you accept a quote
- The license. California requires a contractor’s license for work over $1,000 in labor and materials (raised from $500 on January 1, 2025, by AB 2622, per the state contractor board). Painting is the C-33 classification. Check it on the board’s license lookup.
- The deposit. For home improvement work, a down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less.
- The scope. Rooms or walls by name, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, number of coats, primer, repairs and who moves furniture.
- The product. Ask for the paint line by name. “Premium paint” is not a specification.
Then lay two or three written quotes side by side with the quote comparison tool so they cover the same job. The interior painting page lists what to send a painter for a room or a whole home.
Questions people ask about interior painting costs in Temecula
How much does it cost to paint the inside of a house in Temecula?
No source publishes a collected Temecula price. Homeyou models $5,370–$9,776 for a 1,282 sq ft interior, and national guides run from a few hundred dollars for a room to $5,401–$24,282 for a whole home. Your walls, repairs and scope decide where you land.
How much does it cost to paint one room?
Thumbtack puts one room at $371–$1,011 nationally. Improovy lists a bedroom at $650–$950 and a living room at $940–$1,700. Many painters set a project minimum, so a very small job can cost more than its size suggests.
Do ceilings and trim cost extra?
Often yes. Improovy lists $6.75 a square foot with walls, trim and ceilings against $3.75 without, and CertaPro prices ceilings, baseboards and doors as separate lines. Ask every painter to list them.
Why do the numbers on different sites disagree?
They measure different things: walls only or the whole room, one coat or two, a typical project or a whole home, collected prices or a model. None of them has seen your house.
How do I get a real number?
Describe the job, then ask for a written estimate that names every surface. The cost calculator gives a first budget, and our whole-house cost guide covers the outside too. The quote form on this site sends your request to a local painter.
