The short answer: published exterior ranges for 2026
No web page can price your house. These are the exterior numbers that sources publish today, and what each one measures. They are separate reference points, so I would not average them.
| Job | Published range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Single-story exterior | $3,500–$6,500 | Wallworks, a Temecula painter (FAQ, no date shown). |
| Two-story exterior | $5,500–$10,000 | Same source. |
| Larger or custom home | $10,000–$20,000+ | Same source. |
| Trim only | $1,800–$3,500 | Same source. Specialty finishes add 15–30%. |
| Modeled 2,500 sq ft home | $4,500 / $9,000 / $15,750 | Opsite, a cost-modeling site: budget, mid-range, high-end. A model, not collected quotes. |
| Per square foot, national | $2.20–$4.40 | This Old House. It puts most 2,000 sq ft homes at $4,400–$8,800. |
The last two rows are estimates for an assumed house. A painter's written estimate for your actual walls is the only number that is a price.
Trim only, or the whole house?
The biggest choice you control is scope. Wallworks lists trim-only work at $1,800–$3,500, against $3,500–$6,500 for a full single-story exterior.
CertaPro Painters, a franchise in Orange County, publishes a price list for Yorba Linda (updated June 2026). It is not Temecula, but it shows the same split in one table:
| Job (Yorba Linda) | Published range |
|---|---|
| Trim only, 1 story | $2,950–$3,450 |
| Trim only, 2 story | $3,950–$4,450 |
| Trim and siding, 1 story | $4,950–$5,450 |
| Trim and siding, 2 story | $6,950–$8,450 |
| Garage door, outside only | $250 (2 car) to $400 (3 car) |
Whichever way you go, write the scope down: walls, trim, fascia, eaves, garage door, front door, and what is left unpainted. A quote that says only "paint exterior" can be read three ways.
What the surface does to the price
Siding type changes the work. A Los Angeles contractor's 2026 guide gives per-square-foot ranges by surface. It is a neighboring market, not Temecula, so treat it as a guide to the order of the jobs, not as a local price:
| Surface (Los Angeles, 2026) | Per sq ft | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stucco, standard acrylic | $1.75–$3.50 | Porous, so it takes extra material. |
| Stucco, elastomeric | $2.75–$4.75 | Bridges hairline cracks, longer life. |
| Wood or lap siding | $2.25–$5.00 | More scraping, sanding and priming. |
| Trim, fascia, eaves | $2.50–$6.00 | Detail labor, often a separate line. |
That guide also notes that a mostly stucco home with heavy wood trim can cost more than a larger all-stucco one, because the wood needs scraping, repair and primer. Ask each painter which coating they price (standard acrylic or elastomeric) and whether trim is a separate line.
Prep is the part you cannot see later
The same Los Angeles guide says prep is the line homeowners underestimate. A good quote names each step: inspect for wood rot, cracked stucco and water stains, wash at low to medium pressure and let the wall dry, then scrape, sand, patch and caulk, and prime before color goes on. It adds that older homes built before 1978 need lead-safe containment, which adds protective setup and disposal to the job.
Wallworks lists the price drivers for Temecula homes: the amount of paintable surface (not just home square footage), number of stories and access, trim and detail work, the condition of surfaces and repairs, and the type of surface. If one quote is far below the others, check first whether prep and repairs are in it. Timing matters too: see our guide to the best time to paint a house exterior in Temecula and how long exterior paint takes to dry.
What to check before you accept a quote
- The license. California requires a contractor's license for work over $1,000 in labor and materials (raised from $500 on January 1, 2025, by AB 2622, per the state contractor board). Painting is the C-33 classification. Check it on the board's license lookup.
- The deposit. For home improvement work, a down payment cannot exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less.
- The scope. Walls, trim, fascia, eaves, garage door, number of coats, primer, repairs and who moves patio furniture.
- The product. Ask for the paint line by name. "Premium paint" is not a specification.
If your home is in an HOA, color approval is a separate step before work starts: Temecula HOA guide. Then lay two or three written quotes side by side with the quote comparison tool so they cover the same job.
Questions people ask about exterior painting costs in Temecula
How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house in Temecula?
Wallworks publishes $3,500–$6,500 for one story and $5,500–$10,000 for two. Larger or custom homes start at $10,000. Your house, its repairs and its surface decide where you land.
Is trim-only painting much cheaper?
In both price lists above, trim only costs less than painting trim and walls together: $1,800–$3,500 against $3,500–$6,500 for Wallworks, and $2,950–$3,450 against $4,950–$5,450 for a one-story home at CertaPro. It only makes sense if the walls do not need paint.
Does stucco cost more or less than wood?
In the Los Angeles guide, wood and lap siding run higher per square foot than standard stucco, and elastomeric stucco coating costs more than standard acrylic. Local quotes will differ.
Why do the numbers on different sites disagree?
They measure different things: a painter's own list, a franchise price table, or a model with an assumed house size. None of them has seen your house.
How do I get a real number?
Describe the job, then ask for a written estimate that names every surface. The cost calculator gives a first budget, and our whole-house cost guide covers interiors too. The quote form on this site sends your request to a local painter.
