How to use this tool
- Use room length, width and height, or enter direct painted surface area.
- Subtract measured openings and choose the number of coats.
- Set product coverage and extra allowance. Calculate each different paint or finish separately.
What the result means
Room wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus the openings you enter. Gallons = net painted area × coats ÷ coverage × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). The buying amount rounds up to whole gallons; stores may sell other sizes. Behr describes 250–400 square feet per gallon for one coat; the editable 350 default is a planning example, not a guarantee for your paint. Rough or porous surfaces may need more. Primer, doors and trim are separate unless you include their measured areas.

Questions before you start
Does a 2,000-square-foot home need 2,000 square feet of paint coverage?
Not necessarily. Floor area is different from painted wall area. Measure the surfaces, subtract openings and account for every coat.
Does the calculator include primer?
No separate primer is included. Run a separate calculation using the primer label’s coverage and required coats. Ask a painter to confirm the coating system for your surface.
